# Show your education app to the right audience, in the right words.

> ASO for education apps goes hand in hand with the rules for children: the App Store has a Kids category for ages 11 and under with three age bands and reserves terms like "For Kids" in metadata for it, and on Google Play every app declares its target audience in Play Console.

## What makes ASO different in this category?

- **What the Education category covers**: On the App Store, Education is for apps that offer an interactive learning experience on a specific skill or subject: arithmetic, vocabulary, language learning, test prep, school portals. On Google Play, Education covers exam preparation, study aids, vocabulary and language learning, and games have their own Educational category. [1] [2]
- **The Kids category and its age bands**: Apps designed for kids 11 and under tick Made for Kids in App Store Connect and choose an age band: 5 and under, 6–8 or 9–11. Besides Kids, the app can also sit in a primary and secondary category such as Education. Guideline 1.3 asks that links out of the app and purchases sit behind a parental gate. [1] [3]
- **"For Kids" is reserved for Kids**: Under Guidelines 2.3.8 and 5.1.4, terms like "For Kids" and "For Children" are reserved for the Kids category. An app outside Kids cannot use terms in its name, subtitle, icon, screenshots or description that imply its main audience is children. [3]
- **Target audience and Teacher Approved on Google Play**: In the Target audience and content section of Play Console you pick the age groups before publishing. If children are part of the audience, the Families policies apply. Apps that comply can opt in to be rated for Teacher Approved, though inclusion is not guaranteed. [4]
- **School sales and one-to-one tutoring**: Guideline 3.1.3(c) lets apps sold only to organizations, such as classroom management tools, give access to previously purchased content. Under 3.1.3(d), real-time person-to-person services like one-to-one tutoring may use other purchase methods; one-to-few and one-to-many live services must use in-app purchase. [3]

## Questions

### Does my education app have to be in the Kids category?

No. The Kids category is for apps designed for children 11 and under, entered by choosing Made for Kids. If your app is for adults or teens, Education is your primary category, but you cannot use terms like "For Kids" in your metadata.

### How do I get the Teacher Approved badge?

Apps that comply with the Google Play Families policies can opt in to be rated for Teacher Approved. Google does not guarantee inclusion.
