# App Store Connect analytics: impressions, page views and conversion explained

> App Store Connect Analytics is Apple's built-in report on how people find and use your app: it counts impressions, product page views, downloads, sales and usage, splits them by source such as App Store search or web referrer, and shows App Store metrics only after at least five first-time downloads or pre-orders.

App Store Connect Analytics answers three questions: how many people saw your app, how many of them downloaded it, and where they came from. It also covers sales, subscriptions, retention and crashes. Apple adds privacy thresholds and opt-in rules, so small apps see gaps, and the newest days are not final yet.

## Where do you find App Store Connect Analytics?

Open App Store Connect, go to Apps, select your app and click the **Analytics** tab. Apple lists the required role as Account Holder, Admin, Finance or Sales. The sidebar is organised by question:

| Section | What it answers |
|---|---|
| Overview | Key metrics and recent trends at a glance |
| Sources (under Acquisition) | How people discover the app and how that turns into downloads |
| Product Pages | Default and custom product pages, plus product page optimization tests |
| In-App Events | Event impressions, page views and outcomes |
| Campaigns | Your campaign links |
| Sales, Subscriptions, Offers, Cohorts | Money, plans, trials and offers over time |
| Retention | How often people open the app on the days after install |
| Benchmarks | Your metrics against peer groups |
| Metrics | A free chart view with filters and comparisons |

Analytics is one of three reporting tools. Sales and Trends gives next-day sales and units; Payments and Financial Reports shows settled proceeds. Use Analytics for the funnel, the other two for money that is final.

## What do the main metrics mean?

These are Apple's definitions, shortened. The exact names matter because they are what you pick in the metric menu.

| Metric | Apple's definition |
|---|---|
| Impressions | Times your app was viewed on the Today, Games, Apps and Search tabs for more than one second; includes product page views |
| Impressions (Unique Devices) | Unique devices that viewed your app on those tabs; includes unique product page views |
| Product Page Views | Times your product page was viewed, including when another app loads it with StoreKit |
| Product Page Views (Unique Devices) | Unique devices that viewed your product page |
| Conversion Rate | Total downloads and pre-orders divided by unique device impressions |
| First Time Downloads | First-time downloads on iOS, macOS, tvOS or visionOS devices |
| Redownloads | Taps on the redownload button; not auto-updates or device restores |
| Total Downloads | First Time Downloads plus Redownloads |
| Pre-Orders | Pre-orders placed, minus cancelations |
| Updates | App updates, including auto-updates |
| Installations | Completed installs, including redownloads on the same device and Family Sharing; opt-in data |
| Sessions | Times the app was used for at least two seconds; returning from the background counts again |
| Active Devices | Devices with at least one session in the period |
| Crashes | Total crashes; detailed logs are in Xcode |
| Deletions | Times the app was deleted from the Home Screen or through Manage Storage |
| Proceeds | Estimated amount you receive: customer price minus applicable taxes and Apple's commission |
| Sales | Total billed to customers; not the same as proceeds |
| Paying Users | Unique Apple Accounts that paid for the app or an In-App Purchase |

Two notes. **Impressions are not views of your page**: a person scrolling past your icon in search results counts. **Downloads and installations differ**: downloads come from the App Store; installations, sessions, active devices and deletions are usage data that only include people who agreed to share data with developers.

## What are the source types?

The source type is where a person tapped through to your product page before viewing or first downloading your app.

| Source type | What Apple counts |
|---|---|
| App Store search | Views and downloads from App Store search, including ads in search results |
| App Store browse | Browsing the App Store, for example the Today, Games or Apps sections |
| App referrer | A link in another app, including apps that use StoreKit and Apple apps such as Messages, but not Safari; on iOS, taps from browsers other than Safari also land here |
| Web referrer | A link on a website in Safari; after a chain of redirects, the last URL in the chain is the referrer |
| App Clip | A link inside your App Clip |
| Institutional Purchase | Downloads through Apple Business or Apple School Manager |
| Unavailable | Downloads before April 15, 2017, downloads via gift cards, promo codes or device management software, and some subscription plan changes |

Each time someone manually redownloads your app, the source resets and later sales and usage are attributed to the new source. Because App Store search includes Apple Ads in search results, there is no purely organic search line in this report. ## Why does it say "not enough data"?

Apple holds data back until there is enough of it to protect privacy. The thresholds Apple states:

- **App Store metrics** (impressions, page views, conversion): at least five first-time downloads or pre-orders.
- **Download metrics:** at least five first-time downloads.
- **Usage metrics:** at least five active devices in the selected date range, from people who opted in.
- **App referrers, web referrers and campaign links:** need a minimum threshold before they display. Campaign links appear after more than one day and at least five App Units.
- **Custom product pages and PPO tests:** appear after five first-time downloads attributed to them.
- **Analytics reports via the API:** rows with data from fewer than five users or devices are left out, and a small amount of statistical noise is added.

What to do: widen the date range, remove filters (a single country or device often falls under the threshold), or read the weekly view. Apple does not publish the exact threshold for referrer data.

## How fresh is the data?

Treat the last two days as unfinished. Apple says that in the Analytics Reports API a day's data "is considered complete two days after the reporting date", and that the first recurring report arrives about 24 to 48 hours after you request it. Sales and Trends gives next-day sales and units. Apple does not state a fixed delay for the dashboard itself, so a sudden drop on the most recent day is usually incomplete data, not a real fall; check again two days later.

## How do you read custom product page results?

Go to Analytics, then **Acquisition, Product Pages**, and click a page name. Each custom product page shows product page views, total downloads, conversion rate and proceeds, once it has at least five first-time downloads. The Metrics view lets you filter by product page and compare several pages.

What to know before you compare:

- You can publish up to 70 custom product pages; each has a unique URL and can vary screenshots, previews and promotional text.
- A custom product page can appear in search for keywords you assign from the latest approved version's keyword list, once the page is approved.
- Compare a custom page with the default page for the same source and country. A page reached from an ad link and the default page reached from browse have different audiences.

Apple's own reference is that referring people to a custom product page lifts conversion by 2.5 percentage points on average over the 1.6% average of default pages. More in [Custom product pages](https://uptika.app/en/guides/custom-product-pages).

## How do you read product page optimization (PPO) results?

Go to Analytics, then **Acquisition, Product Pages**; the most recent test is shown in the Product Page Optimization section, and "See All Tests" lists older ones. A test appears once five first-time downloads are attributed to it and then updates daily.

| Label or field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Collecting Data | Not enough data yet to tell |
| Performing Better / Performing Worse | The treatment beats or trails the baseline with at least 90% confidence |
| Likely to be Inconclusive | At the current pace there will not be enough data within 90 days |
| Estimated Conversion Rate | Apple's estimate per variant, using test data plus existing data |
| Estimated Relative Lift (Improvement) | Relative change against the baseline |
| Credible Interval | The range where the rate or lift falls with 90% probability |

Apple uses Bayesian statistics here, which is why rates are called "estimated". Test rules from Apple: up to three treatments, one test at a time, up to 90 days, and a test cannot be changed once started. Do not stop a test as soon as a lift appears; wait for a label.

## Can you pull the data by API?

Yes. The Analytics Reports API in the App Store Connect API delivers App Store engagement reports (discovery and engagement, web preview), commerce reports (downloads, pre-orders, purchases, subscription events and states) and usage reports (sessions, crashes, installations and deletions, opt-in). An ONGOING request generates daily, weekly and monthly reports; a ONE_TIME_SNAPSHOT returns available history.

## Common reading mistakes

- Reading conversion for all sources together, then crediting a screenshot change for a shift in traffic mix.
- Comparing usage metrics (opt-in only) with download metrics (all downloads).
- Treating Sales as money you receive; Proceeds is the estimate of that.
- Judging the last day before it is complete.
- Comparing App Store Conversion Rate with Google Play's click-through rate; see [Play Console reports](https://uptika.app/en/guides/play-console-reports).

## Questions

### How do I read App Store Connect analytics?

Open your app, choose the Analytics tab and start in Overview to spot a change. Then open Acquisition, Sources, pick one metric such as Conversion Rate, and read each source and country separately before you compare periods.

### What are App Store impressions?

Apple counts an impression each time your app is viewed for more than one second on the Today, Games, Apps or Search tabs of the App Store, and product page views are included. Impressions (Unique Devices) counts each device once and is the denominator of Conversion Rate.

### Why does App Store Connect analytics show not enough data?

Apple hides data until a privacy threshold is met: App Store and download metrics need at least five first-time downloads, usage metrics at least five active devices, and app referrers, web referrers and campaign links need a minimum amount of data. Usage data only comes from people who agreed to share it.

### Is App Store Connect analytics delayed?

Yes. Apple says the Analytics Reports API treats a day's data as complete two days after the reporting date, and the first recurring report arrives about 24 to 48 hours after you request it. Read the last two days as provisional.

### Can I get App Store Connect analytics through an API?

Yes. The Analytics Reports API in the App Store Connect API delivers reports on App Store engagement, commerce and app usage, either as recurring daily, weekly and monthly reports or as a one-time snapshot of history.
