# How to market an app: a plan with and without a budget

> Marketing an app works best in a fixed order: first make the store listing convert, then add free channels you control (store features, a website that search engines and AI assistants can cite, community and social), and only then pay for reach with Apple Ads or Google App campaigns, measuring every channel separately.

## Why does the store listing come first?

Every channel ends on your App Store product page or Google Play listing. If that page does not convert, every paid or earned visit is partly wasted. Before any campaign, check three things:

1. **Does the title or subtitle say what the app does** in the words people search for?
2. **Do the first three screenshots** show the main result, the core action and what makes you different?
3. **Is the rating solid** for your category, and are recent reviews answered?

## Which channels exist, and what does each cost?

| Channel | Cost | Speed | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store search (ASO) | Time | Weeks | Ranks for target searches, impressions, conversion rate |
| Store features (events, promotional content, featuring) | Time | Days to weeks | Event views and installs, page views during the feature |
| Custom product pages and custom store listings | Time | Days | Conversion per page compared with the default |
| Your website and guides | Time | Months | Visits, clicks to the store, mentions in AI answers |
| Communities and social | Time | Ongoing | Visits from each post or thread, installs per source |
| Press and creators | Time or money | One-off | Installs in the days after, mentions |
| Apple Ads | Money | Immediate | Cost per tap, cost per install, installs per term |
| Google App campaigns | Money | Immediate (learning time) | Cost per install, cost per in-app action |
| Email and in-app referral | Time | Ongoing | Opens, invites, installs from invites |

## The plan without a budget

**Week 1–2: the listing.** Put the main searches in the title and subtitle or short description. Rebuild the first three screenshots. Answer recent reviews.

**Week 2–4: free store features.**

- Create an **[in-app event](https://uptika.app/en/guides/in-app-events)** on the App Store for anything time-bound: a challenge, a season, a new content drop. Events can last up to 31 days and be promoted up to 14 days early.
- On Google Play, create **[promotional content](https://uptika.app/en/guides/google-play-promotional-content)** for offers, events or major updates; it shows on your listing, and eligible apps can request featuring (up to 6 slots a quarter for broad audiences, requested at least 14 days before the start).
- Submit a **featuring nomination** in App Store Connect for launches and big updates: [How to get featured](https://uptika.app/en/guides/get-featured-app-store-google-play).

**Month 2 onward: owned channels.**

- **A website with real answers.** A page per main use case, written in plain language, linking to the store. Search engines and AI assistants cite pages that answer a question directly.
- **Communities.** Answer questions where your users already talk, without spamming links. One helpful answer that mentions the app when it fits beats ten link drops.
- **Short videos of the real app.** The same screen recordings you use in app previews work on social channels.

## The plan with a budget

1. **Brand terms first.** Bid on your own app name with Apple Ads so rivals cannot take the top slot on your name.
2. **Specific category terms next.** Narrow searches with clear intent usually convert better than broad ones.
3. **Send ads to a matching page.** Apple Ads can use custom product pages to create ad variations; Google App campaigns can use custom store listings. Apple reports a 2.5 percentage point average increase in conversion when people are sent to a custom product page, against a 1.6% average on default pages.
4. **Set a stop rule.** Pause any term or campaign whose cost per install stays above what an install earns.
5. **Scale what works.** Raise budgets only on terms with stable cost and good retention.

## How do I keep one message across channels?

People notice when an ad promises one thing and the store page shows another. Use one sentence that says who the app is for and what it does, and repeat it:

- in the subtitle or short description,
- as the caption of the first screenshot,
- in the first line of the description,
- in ad text and social posts,
- on your website's home page.

Both stores also limit what that message may contain. Google Play bans ranking, price and promotional claims like "#1", "Best" or "10% off" in titles, icons and images, and Apple bars unverifiable claims and prices in metadata. Keep claims you can show inside the app.

## How do I measure what works?

- **A separate link per channel.** Give every channel its own tracked store link, so App Analytics and Play Console's acquisition reports can show them apart.
- **One change at a time.** If you change the listing and start ads in the same week, you will not know which helped.
- **Compare by country.** Store traffic, rank and conversion differ per storefront.
- **Look at retention, not only installs.** A channel that brings installs who leave in a day is expensive even when cheap per install.

## Common mistakes

- Starting ads on a listing that does not convert.
- Using a different promise in ads than on the store page.
- Bidding on rival brand names you would not be allowed to use in your own listing text.
- Measuring only total installs, so you cannot tell channels apart.
- Changing everything at once before a launch.

## How does Uptika help?

Uptika covers the store and AI side of the plan. The ASO score shows how ready the listing is, Keyword radar tracks your daily rank for each target search, and the AI echo asks AI assistants the questions your users ask, such as "what is the best app for this?", and records whether and where your app is named. If you connect Apple Ads, spend and cost per install sit next to organic rank for each keyword. Without signing in, [Listing X-Ray](https://uptika.app/en/tools/listing-x-ray) checks any listing. The Free plan tracks one app in one storefront: [start free](https://uptika.app/app/#/?signup=1).

## Questions

### How do I market an app for free?

Make the store listing convert (search terms in the text, clear first screenshots), use free store features (in-app events, Google Play promotional content, featuring nominations, custom product pages and custom store listings), publish helpful pages on your own website, and take part in communities where your users already talk. Track each source with campaign links.

### How do I promote an app with a small budget?

Spend on search ads for your own brand and the most specific category terms first, send that traffic to a page built for the search, and stop terms whose cost per install is higher than what an install earns. Keep the rest of the budget for one channel you can measure well.

### What are app install ads?

Ads whose goal is an install. On the App Store, Apple Ads shows ads in search results and other App Store placements; Google App campaigns use your text, images and videos to run ads across Google Search, Google Play, YouTube, Discover and the Display Network.

### How do I make my app known?

Pick one clear audience and one message, make every channel say the same thing as the store page, and repeat what works. A launch moment (pre-orders or pre-registration, a featuring nomination, an in-app event) gives people a reason to look now.
