# How keyword rank tracking works on the App Store and Google Play

> To track an app's keyword ranking, search one keyword in one country's store at the same time every day and record the app's organic position; Uptika does this automatically, reading the App Store's first 200 results through the iTunes Search API and Google Play's public search page, which shows about 30.

Keyword rank tracking records where your app appears in a store's organic search results for one keyword, in one country, each day. A single phone search tells you little; a daily reading at a fixed time, kept per storefront, shows trends you can act on. This guide covers manual checks, why phones disagree, what moves ranks, and how to read the series.

## What is a keyword rank?

A keyword rank is your app's position in the organic search results for one search, in one country storefront, on one day. Position 1 is the first organic result. Paid placements are not positions. If your app is not in the results that can be read, it is "not ranked" for that day; on Google Play that means outside the top 30.

Three things define every rank, and a number without them cannot be compared:

- **Keyword**: the exact search, in the language people type it.
- **Storefront**: one store in one country, for example the App Store in Brazil or Google Play in Germany.
- **Date and time**: when the reading was taken.

## How do I check my app's keyword ranking manually?

You check it by searching the keyword in the store app and counting down to your app, skipping ads. It works, but it gives you one personal sample, not a measurement.

1. Make sure the phone's store is the country you care about. On an iPhone this is your Apple Account's country or region; on Android it is your Google Play country.
2. Open the App Store or Google Play app and search the keyword exactly as a user would type it.
3. Skip any result marked as an ad. On the App Store, the Apple Ads slot sits at the top of results.
4. Count the organic results down to your app. Note the position, the time and the device.
5. Repeat at the same time on other days, on the same device, before you draw a conclusion.

Manual checks break down quickly: one person cannot read 40 keywords in five countries every morning, and you cannot switch countries freely. Before changing the Apple Account country, Apple asks you to use up any store balance and end subscriptions that block the change, and Google's help says you must wait at least 90 days between Google Play country changes.

| | Manual phone check | Daily tracked reading |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | Your personal, signed-in result | The public result for the storefront |
| Countries | Your account's country only | Any storefront you add |
| Time | Whenever you look | Fixed time each day |
| History | What you wrote down | A stored series per keyword |
| Best use | A quick sanity check | Trends, before/after comparisons |

## Why is my rank different on my phone?

Your phone and a tracker usually agree near the top of the results and drift further down, because they are not reading the same thing. Here is what differs, labelled by how sure we can be.

- **Storefront (official)**: each store shows content by account country or region. Google's help says your Google Play country decides what you find in the store; Apple ties the App Store to your Apple Account's country or region.
- **Device and platform (observed)**: an iPad, an iPhone and an Android tablet can see different lists, for example when an app does not support the device.
- **Signed-in history and personalisation (observed)**: apps you already have, past searches and language settings may shape what you see. Neither store publishes how much personalisation changes search order, so treat this as field observation.
- **Ads (official)**: Apple says the Search tab can show Apple Ads, and search results carry paid slots. Count only organic results.
- **Time (observed)**: results move during the day. A check at 09:00 and a reading at 04:00 can differ by a few places.

Uptika reads the public result for each storefront without a signed-in user, at the same time each day. That makes day-to-day changes comparable, which a phone check cannot promise.

## How does Uptika read App Store ranks?

Uptika reads App Store ranks from the iTunes Search API, which returns apps in search order for a country. Each daily reading keeps the first 200 results, so any position from 1 to 200 is measured exactly.

- The country is the storefront: a search in the US store and in the Turkish store are separate readings.
- The listings of the first 10 results are saved too. Their rating counts, titles and categories feed [keyword difficulty](https://uptika.app/en/guides/methodology) and keyword fit.
- The paid ad slot at the top of search in the App Store app is not part of these results.

## How does Uptika read Google Play ranks?

Uptika reads Google Play ranks from the public Google Play search page for the keyword, with the country and that country's language set, for example Brazil in Portuguese. That page returns its first result page, about 30 apps, so Google Play positions are measured from 1 to 30 and anything deeper reads as "outside the top 30".

## How deep can rankings be tracked?

Rank depth depends on what each store exposes publicly, not on the tracker's ambition.

| | App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|
| Source | iTunes Search API | Public search page |
| Depth per reading | First 200 results | First page, about 30 results |
| Country | Storefront of the country | Country and its language |
| Popularity source | App Store search hints, up to 10 per prefix | Play suggestions, up to 5 per prefix |
| Top 10 listings saved | Yes | Yes |
| Reading time | Daily, from 04:00 Istanbul time | Daily, from 04:00 Istanbul time |

In practice the depth difference matters most for new apps. On the App Store you can watch a keyword climb from 180 to 60 long before it reaches page one. On Google Play the same climb is invisible until the app enters the top 30, so watch [Play Console reports](https://uptika.app/en/guides/play-console-reports) for search traffic in the meantime.

## What moves an app's keyword rank?

Both stores name their ranking inputs only in broad terms. Here is what they say, then what to check first when a rank moves.

| | Apple says (App Store search page) | Google says (Play Console Help) |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Matches for the app's title, subtitle, keywords and primary category | Title and description; keep the most important text near the top; no keyword spam |
| Behaviour | Downloads, ratings and reviews, and more | Ratings, reviews, downloads and other factors |
| Experience | Ratings and reviews can influence ranking | The overall experience of the app, based on user behaviour and feedback |
| Limits | Keyword field is comma-separated with no spaces after commas; words in the name, subtitle and category need not be repeated | Title 30, short description 80, full description 4,000 characters |
| Penalties | Other app or company names are not allowed in keywords | Repetitive or irrelevant keywords can lead to suspension |

Apple also indexes the optional secondary category. Google says the full weighting is proprietary, and Apple does not publish one either, so any tool that claims an exact formula for store ranking is guessing.

When a rank moves, check these causes in order:

1. **Your own release**: a new title, subtitle, keyword field or short description changes what you are indexed for. Text changes go live only after review, and positions often take some days to settle (observed, not an official figure).
2. **A rival's listing change**: a competitor adds your keyword to its title. Uptika logs rivals' title, text, icon, screenshot, version and price changes daily so you can see them next to your rank; [competitor analysis](https://uptika.app/en/guides/app-competitor-analysis) shows how to use them.
3. **Ratings and installs**: a burst of installs or ratings, yours or a rival's, moves positions.
4. **Seasonality**: some searches swing with holidays, exams or travel seasons.
5. **Store-side changes**: both stores adjust ranking without notice. When every app in the top 30 moves on the same day, it is the store.

## How often do app rankings update?

Neither store publishes a re-ranking schedule. In practice, results shift continuously as ratings, installs and listings change, so the question that matters is how often you read them. Uptika reads every tracked keyword once a day from 04:00 Istanbul time, re-reads popularity when it is older than 7 days, and reads category charts every 3 hours. One fixed daily reading is enough for ASO decisions; reading more often mostly adds noise.

## How do rankings differ between countries?

Every storefront is its own ranking. The same keyword can be popular in one country and rare in another, the top 10 can be different apps, and your listing may be in a different language there.

- On the App Store, the storefront follows the country; Apple's App Store search hints are read in 28 storefronts for popularity.
- On Google Play, Uptika sets both the country and its language, because Play results depend on both.
- A keyword that ranks 4th in one country and is not ranked in another usually points to a missing or weak localized listing, not to a ranking penalty.

Add a storefront only when you have, or plan, a listing written for it. Tracking English keywords in a country where your page is only in English tells you little about how the local-language searches behave.

## Which keywords should I track?

Track the searches your users would type to find an app like yours, in each country you care about, and keep the list small enough to act on.

1. **Start from your listing**: every term in your title, subtitle, keyword field or short description should be tracked, or it is wasted space.
2. **Add the obvious category searches**: what a new user would type before they know your name.
3. **Check intent**: search each candidate and look at the top 10. If most are a different kind of app, drop it.
4. **Mix sizes**: a few popular searches, more mid-sized ones, and long-tail phrases where a new app can rank.
5. **Add your brand**, and the searches your closest rivals win. Tracking rival brands is fine; putting them in your own listing breaks store rules.
6. **Check popularity and difficulty** before you commit. The free [Keyword Atlas](https://uptika.app/en/tools/keyword-atlas) shows both for one term in up to 10 countries.

Uptika labels each keyword's fit (fitting, own brand, rival brand, other kind of app) so the [ASO score](https://uptika.app/en/guides/methodology) only counts keywords you can win. The Free plan tracks 10 keywords in one storefront, which is enough to start.

## How should I read a rank series?

Read ranks as a series, not as a single number, and decide on the weekly picture.

- **Same time, every day**: one reading per day at a fixed hour keeps days comparable.
- **Use the weekly median**: the middle value of seven days ignores a one-day spike. Readings of 14, 12, 15, 11, 13, 30 and 12 have a median of 13; the average is about 15, pulled up by the single bad day.
- **Top 10 first**: that is where most taps go. Positions 11 to 30 are "striking distance", where a small push can reach page one.
- **Weight by popularity**: moving from 8 to 4 on a popular search is worth more than from 3 to 1 on a rare one. [Search visibility](https://uptika.app/en/guides/methodology) does this across all your keywords at once.
- **Mark your releases**: put every listing change next to the series, then compare the two weeks before and after.

A rank is not the goal on its own. App Store search results can show your rating and up to three screenshots or previews, so a better rank with a weak first screenshot may not bring installs. Check the result in [App Store Connect analytics](https://uptika.app/en/guides/app-store-connect-analytics) and your [conversion rate](https://uptika.app/en/guides/app-store-conversion-rate), and use [measuring ASO impact](https://uptika.app/en/guides/measure-aso-impact) for a clean before/after method. AI assistants are a separate discovery channel with no rank at all; [AI search and app recommendations](https://uptika.app/en/guides/ai-search-app-recommendations) covers that.

## Questions

### How do I check my app's keyword ranking?

Search the keyword in the App Store or Google Play app on a phone set to the right country, skip anything marked as an ad, and count down to your app. That gives one personal sample. For a comparable number, read the same keyword in the same storefront at a fixed time each day, which is what a rank tracker such as Uptika's Keyword radar does.

### How often do app rankings update?

Neither Apple nor Google publishes a schedule; in practice results shift continuously as ratings, downloads and listings change. Uptika reads every tracked keyword once a day from 04:00 Istanbul time, and category charts every 3 hours. Listing text changes only count once the new version or listing is live.

### Why is my rank different on my phone?

Your phone shows the store of your account's country or region, signed in, on your device, with your apps and history. A rank tracker reads the public result for the storefront without a signed-in user. The two usually agree near the top and drift further down; treat the phone check as an observation, and the daily reading as the series.

### How deep can rankings be tracked?

It depends on what the store exposes. Uptika reads the first 200 App Store results through the iTunes Search API, so any position from 1 to 200 is exact. Google Play's public search page returns about 30 apps, so Play positions are measured from 1 to 30 and deeper ranks read as outside the top 30.

### Are search ads counted as positions?

No. Ranks are organic results only. Paid placements, such as the Apple Ads slot at the top of App Store search, are left out of every reading.
