# Negative reviews and rating drops: what to do and what not to do

> When ratings fall, find the cause first (a release, a crash, a price or ads change, or an outside event), fix it and reply to the affected reviews; you cannot delete genuine reviews on either store, but Apple lets you reset the summary rating with a new version and Google Play weights its displayed rating toward recent ratings.

## What should you do first when ratings drop?

Diagnose before you reply. A rating drop almost always has one cause you can name, and the right fix depends on it. Read the last 50 low-star reviews, sort them by app version and date, and walk this tree:

1. **Do most low ratings mention the newest version?** Then it is a release problem. Check crashes and the main flows on that version. On iOS, pause a phased release; on Google Play, halt the staged rollout (see [phased release and staged rollout](https://uptika.app/en/guides/phased-release-staged-rollout)).
2. **Do they mention crashes, freezing or not opening?** A stability problem, sometimes on specific devices or OS versions. On Android, Android vitals in Play Console shows crash and ANR rates by device.
3. **Do they mention price, subscription, trial or paywall?** A monetization change. Check what changed and whether the paywall copy matches what users get.
4. **Do they mention ads?** Ad frequency or a new format. Compare ad settings with the previous version.
5. **Do they mention login, sync or lost data?** Usually a backend or third-party outage. Fix, then reply to each affected user.
6. **No pattern, sudden burst of 1 stars with no text or copy-paste text?** Possibly coordinated. Do not retaliate; document it and report the reviews.
7. **None of the above, slow decline?** Expectations changed: a rival improved, or your store page promises something the app does not deliver.

## What should you do, and what not?

| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Fix the cause, then reply with the version that fixes it | Argue, blame the user or reveal their personal details |
| Move private cases to support email | Ask for 5 stars in exchange for help |
| Report reviews that break store rules | Post fake positive reviews or pay for them |
| Ask for ratings at moments of success with the official prompts | Show a "Do you like us?" gate that sends only happy users to the store |
| Update your reply when the fix ships | Offer coins, discounts or unlocks for ratings |
| Consider an App Store rating reset after a big fix | Reset the rating every release |

Both stores are explicit. Apple's guidelines (3.0) say attempts to manipulate reviews or inflate chart rankings with paid, incentivized, **filtered** or fake feedback can lead to expulsion from the developer program; 5.6.3 forbids manipulating charts, search or reviews; 5.6.1 disallows custom review prompts. Google Play's policy forbids incentivized ratings, fake or fraudulent reviews, forced pop-ups to pressure users into rating and automated services that inflate ratings or installs. Apple also lists excessive negative reviews among signs that an app does not meet quality expectations (5.6.4).

## Should you reset your App Store rating?

Apple lets you reset the summary rating when you release a new version. The facts:

- It affects **all countries and regions at once**.
- **Written reviews stay** on the product page; only the summary rating resets.
- A message on the product page says the rating was recently reset, and a new rating appears once enough people rate the new version.
- **It cannot be undone** after the version is released.
- How: on the version page, in **Reset Overview Rating**, select "Reset rating when this version is released", save, submit. Admin or App Manager role.

Apple's own advice is to use it sparingly, and its design guidelines point out the trade-off: a fresh rating reflects the current version but starts with fewer ratings, which can discourage some people from downloading.

Reset when all three are true: the low rating was caused by a problem you have now fixed, the new version clearly addresses it, and you can drive enough new ratings soon (through well-timed prompts; see [asking for ratings on iOS](https://uptika.app/en/guides/ios-rating-prompt-requestreview)). Do not reset to hide a problem that still exists; the new rating will follow the old one down.

Google Play has no reset. Its displayed rating is **weighted toward recent ratings**, so a real fix shows up in the visible rating over time.

## Why are reviews missing or delayed on Google Play?

- New ratings and reviews are usually held for **about 24 hours** before they appear.
- During an investigation of suspicious activity, **all** new ratings and reviews for the app can be held back.
- Reviews of test versions are never public; testers send private feedback.

## How do you reply to a negative review?

Short, specific, calm. Name the problem, give the version or date of the fix, and offer a support channel for anything private. Apple's guideline 5.6.1 asks that responses stay targeted to the user's comment without personal information, spam or marketing. Templates for bugs, payments, ads and more are in [replying to app reviews](https://uptika.app/en/guides/reply-to-app-reviews).

When the fix ships, edit your reply to say so. On Google Play the Reviews analysis page shows updated ratings, which tells you whether replies plus fixes actually move users.

## How do you stop the next drop?

- Ship risky updates gradually and watch reviews for the new version daily during rollout.
- Tag reviews weekly by cause (bug, price, ads, request, praise) so a trend shows before it hits the average; the method is in [app review analysis](https://uptika.app/en/guides/app-review-analysis).
- Earn more ratings from satisfied users with the system prompts, within the rules: see [how to get more app reviews](https://uptika.app/en/guides/get-more-app-reviews) and the [Google Play In-App Review API](https://uptika.app/en/guides/google-play-in-app-review-api).

Uptika watches this for you. Its **Reviews** page shows both stores' reviews by version with the weekly average, and on paid plans an alert reaches your channel when three or more 1-star reviews arrive within two days.Uptika's **Daily ping** then shows every morning what moved since the last reading: keyword ranks, category chart positions and new 1–2 star reviews, so a weak build shows up within a day. ## Questions

### How should I respond to negative app reviews?

Reply briefly and specifically, name the problem, say what you are doing about it, and move private details to a support channel. Then fix the cause and update your reply when the fix ships. Do not argue in public.

### Can I reset my App Store rating?

Yes, when you release a new version: in the version page, choose to reset the rating when this version is released. It resets the summary rating in all countries at once, written reviews stay visible, and the old rating cannot be restored. Apple recommends using it sparingly.

### Can I delete bad reviews on Google Play?

No. Developers cannot delete reviews. You can reply once publicly to each review, and you can report reviews that break Google Play's comment posting policy, such as spam, abuse or off-topic content.

### Why are my Google Play reviews not showing?

New reviews are usually held for about 24 hours before they appear. If Google is investigating suspicious activity on your app, all new ratings and reviews can be held back from publication.
