Google Play short description: 80 characters, with examples

The Google Play short description is a line of up to 80 characters that users see first on your store listing and that Google says appears in places like search results, so it should state your app's biggest benefit in plain words, with no price, ranking claim or keyword list.

The Google Play short description is the one line under your app name on the store listing, up to 80 characters. Play Console Help calls it "the first text users see when looking at your app's detail page", and Google's store listing guidance says it "appears in places like search results". Users tap it to expand the full description.

What is the Google Play short description character limit?

The limit is 80 characters, counting spaces and punctuation. Play Console Help says the limit applies equally to full-width and half-width characters, so Japanese, Chinese and Korean listings also get 80. Every Turkish, German or accented letter counts as one character on Google Play; the byte limit some people mention belongs to the App Store keyword field, not to Google Play.

What does Google say a short description should do?

Google's guidance for this field, which it calls the promotional description in its store listing best practices, comes down to six points:

  • Explain the app's core purpose in 80 characters or less.
  • Highlight the biggest advantages and unique features.
  • Use simple language and get to the point.
  • Be accurate and do not mislead.
  • No pricing or ranking: no offers such as "free" or "discount", no claims such as "#1" or "Best".
  • Keep it suitable for a general audience.

Two more rules: do not repeat the short description in the full description, and avoid repetitive or irrelevant keywords, which Play Console Help says can lead to suspension.

Google does not say field by field what search reads. It says the text in your store listing helps users discover your app, and it describes the short description as appearing in search results. In practice, practitioners commonly observe that a term in the short description helps rank more than the same term in the full description and less than in the title. Because Google does not confirm that order, put one or two of your most important search terms into the short description naturally and measure the result on your own keywords.

Can you use emoji in the short description?

The metadata policy's explicit emoji rule covers the app title, icon and developer name: "Don't use emojis, emoticons, or repeated special characters in these metadata elements." The short description is not named in that sentence. The same policy, however, forbids "improperly formatted" or "excessive" metadata anywhere in the listing, and Google's search guidance asks you to avoid excessive emoji or ASCII characters in the description because they confuse screen readers and voice control. Google does not say more than that about emoji in the short description. The safe reading: plain text, and at most a symbol that carries meaning, never a row of them.

Which patterns work, and which break the rules?

These patterns stay within Google's guidance:

  • Verb + object + result: "Track spending, set monthly budgets and see where your money goes."
  • Job + differentiator: what the app does, then the one thing that sets it apart.
  • Audience + outcome: who it is for and what they get.
  • Two or three concrete features joined in one sentence.

These break the rules or waste the line:

  • Price or deals: "Free", "50% off", "No ads for a limited time".
  • Ranking claims: "#1", "Best", "Top rated", "Popular".
  • Keyword lists: "notes, notepad, memo, notebook".
  • Calls to action with nothing else: "Download now and try it today!"
  • The app name again: it already sits above the short description.

How do you test a short description with store listing experiments?

You test it with a localized store listing experiment, the experiment type that can include your app's descriptions. Default graphics experiments only test the icon, feature graphic and screenshots. Play Console Help gives these limits: up to 2 variants per experiment, one default graphics experiment or up to five localized experiments at a time, and experiments stop automatically after 6 months.

  1. In Play Console, go to Grow users → Store presence → Store listings.
  2. In the "Experiment" column of the listing, click Set up.
  3. Name the experiment (50 characters or fewer) and choose Experiment on a localized listing, then pick the languages to test.
  4. Choose the target metric: unique user install clicks, unique user open clicks or unique user pre-registration clicks. Play Console estimates how long the test will need.
  5. Select the short description as the asset to test and enter your variant. Google recommends testing one asset at a time so you know what caused the change.
  6. Save and submit the changes for review from the Publishing overview page.

The store listing experiments guide explains the results screen, minimum detectable effect and how long to run a test.

How Uptika helps

Before you publish or test a new line, paste it into the free Metadata Linter: it counts against the 80-character limit and flags repeated words, "best", "#1" and "free" in your browser. An experiment measures installs; it does not show what the new wording did to search. The free Keyword radar records your Google Play rank for each keyword every day, so you can see whether a winning variant also kept your positions. Questions

What is the Google Play short description length?

Up to 80 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Play Console Help says the limit is the same for full-width and half-width characters.

Is the Google Play short description indexed for search?

Google does not publish a field-by-field list of what search reads. Its store listing guidance says the short description appears in places like search results, and its search guidance says the text in your store listing helps users discover your app. Treat it as searchable and write it for people.

Can I use emojis in the Google Play short description?

The metadata policy bans emoji, emoticons and repeated special characters explicitly in the title, icon and developer name. It does not name the short description in that rule, but it forbids improperly formatted or excessive metadata anywhere, and Google's search guidance asks you to avoid excessive emoji in the description. Plain text is the safe choice.

Can I A/B test my short description?

Yes, with a localized store listing experiment in Play Console, which can test your app's descriptions in up to five languages with up to two variants. Default graphics experiments test only the icon, feature graphic and screenshots.
