What is ASO? App Store Optimization in 2026

ASO (App Store Optimization) is the work of making an app easier to find and more likely to be installed on the App Store and Google Play, by improving the fields each store indexes for search (title, subtitle, keywords, descriptions), the assets that turn a visit into an install (icon, screenshots, video) and the signals the stores rank on (downloads, ratings and reviews, quality).

What does ASO cover?

ASO covers two jobs: being found, and being chosen. Being found means showing up in store search, category charts and featured spots. Being chosen means turning the people who see your app into installs. A listing can fail at either: it can rank well and convert badly, or look great and never be seen.

LeverHelps to be foundHelps to be chosen
Name / title, subtitle, short descriptionYes: the strongest text fieldsYes: the first words people read
App Store keyword fieldYesNo: it is hidden
CategoryYes: Apple indexes primary and secondary categoryYes: it decides where people browse into you
Icon, screenshots, preview videoIndirectly, through more installsYes: the biggest conversion lever
Ratings and reviewsYes: both stores name them as ranking factorsYes: shown in search results and on the page
Updates, in-app events, promotional contentIndirectly: fresh reasons to show and tapYes
LocalizationYes: every language has its own searchesYes

The two stores index different fields, so the same app needs different text in each. This table separates what the stores document from what they do not.

FieldApp StoreGoogle Play
App name / title2–30 characters. Indexed: Apple lists the title under text relevance30 characters. The main text field for search
Subtitle30 characters. Indexed. Changes need a new app versionDoes not exist
Keyword field100 bytes, hidden, comma-separated. IndexedDoes not exist
Short descriptionDoes not exist80 characters, visible. Google: "Provide a short, one-line description"
Long descriptionUp to 4,000 characters. Not in Apple's list of text-relevance fields; used by web search engines after releaseUp to 4,000 characters. Google advises "SEO best practices" in it, within the spam rules
Promotional text170 characters, changes without a new version. Apple: it "doesn't affect your app's search ranking"Does not exist
CategoryPrimary and optional secondary category are indexedCategory plus up to 5 tags
Screenshots1–10 per device size; up to 3 can show in search resultsUp to 8 per device type
VideoUp to 3 app previews per device size and languageOne YouTube promo video

Two details trip people up. Apple's help pages give the keyword field as 100 bytes, so letters like ç, ş, é or ß use more than one of your 100. And on Google Play there is no hidden field at all: everything you index is text people can read, which is why keyword stuffing there is both visible and a policy violation. Exact limits for every field are in the 30-step ASO checklist.

Both stores publish the outline and keep the weights private. Apple writes that search results are based on "text relevance (matches for your app's title, subtitle, keywords, and primary category), as well as user behavior (downloads, ratings and reviews, and more)". Google writes that apps "are ranked based on a combination of ratings, reviews, downloads, and other factors".

SignalDocumented by the store? What to do
Text match in indexed fieldsYes (Apple: title, subtitle, keywords, primary category)Put each important search in a field that counts, once
DownloadsYes, both storesConversion work and campaigns raise it
Ratings and reviewsYes, both storesAsk at good moments, answer bad reviews
App quality (crashes, ANRs)Yes, Google: above the Android vitals thresholds an app is "likely to be less discoverable"Keep user-perceived crashes under 1.09% and ANRs under 0.47% of daily users
Recency and pace of installsNot documentedCommon field observation; treat as a hypothesis
Developer (company) nameApp Store: yes, App Store Connect Help says your app is searchable by app name and company name. Google Play: not documentedDo not repeat your company name in the keyword field

The full breakdown, with a decision tree for sudden rank drops, is in How App Store and Google Play search ranking works.

How is ASO different from SEO?

ASO and SEO share the core idea: learn the words people use, then deserve the click. Three things differ. Store search has no links, so authority comes from installs and ratings instead. The space is tiny: 30 characters of title and, on the App Store, 30 of subtitle and 100 of keywords. And the result card shows your icon, rating and up to three screenshots right in the list, so design is part of ranking work: a better tap rate brings the downloads that both stores count.

How long does ASO take to work?

ASO has two clocks. The first is review: a text change on the App Store needs a submission, and Apple says it reviews at least 50% of submissions in under 24 hours and 90% in under 48 hours. Google Play changes also pass a review. The second clock is the ranking response. Positions usually settle over the following days, and the effect of a change on installs needs weeks of data to read. Change one thing at a time where you can, write down the date, and compare like with like: the same weekdays, the same country, the same keywords.

What is a practical ASO process? A 10-step checklist

  1. List 30–50 searches that describe what your app does, in your users' words, separately for every country you care about. Keyword research shows how to do this with free data.
  2. Measure popularity and difficulty for each search. Start with searches that are clearly relevant, have some popularity and are not owned by giants.
  3. Write the title with your brand plus the single most valuable search, under 30 characters, without stuffing.
  4. App Store: fill the subtitle and all 100 bytes of the keyword field. No word twice, no spaces after commas, no plurals of words you already have, no category names, no other apps' names.
  5. Google Play: write a short description that carries your main search naturally, and use your important searches in the first lines of the long description, as a person would write them.
  6. Pick the right category (and on Google Play up to 5 tags). See choosing a category and reading top charts.
  7. Make the first three screenshots explain the core benefit, because they can appear in search results. Show the app in use: App Review wants more than half of the screenshots for each device to do that.
  8. Earn ratings at the right moment, after a success inside the app, through the system prompts, never with a custom pop-up.
  9. Localize the listing for every country that brings installs: keywords are searched differently in each language.
  10. Track ranks daily and revise every release. Read rank changes against your own releases and your rivals' listing changes, drop searches nobody types and add the ones rivals win.

The long version, with a source and a field limit for each item, is the 30-step ASO checklist. Games have their own rules on screenshots, video and events: see ASO for mobile games.

Which ASO data is free?

You can do serious ASO with free data. Apple Ads shows a search popularity score from 1 to 5 for keywords you look up in a campaign. App Store Connect Analytics shows impressions, product page views and conversion by source, including App Store search. In Play Console, Grow users > Store performance > Conversion analysis can be broken down by search term, and the traffic sources separate brand searches ("Google Play search") from browsing and category searches ("Google Play explore").

Uptika adds free tools that need no account:

  • Listing X-Ray reads any public listing and shows character use, how much of the store's own search suggestions the text covers, and rating strength against the category's top 10.
  • Keyword Atlas measures one search in up to 10 countries on both stores: popularity, difficulty and the top 3 apps in each market.
  • Metadata Linter checks your text against the limits and the common rejection risks before you submit.
  • Chart Movers shows the climbers and new entrants in category charts.

What are the most common ASO mistakes?

  • Writing a slogan in the title instead of the search people actually type.
  • Repeating the same word in the name, subtitle and keyword field. Apple counts it once; the repeats are wasted space.
  • Putting other apps' names or "best", "#1" and prices into metadata. Apple's guideline 2.3.7 and Google Play's metadata policy both forbid it.
  • Translating the listing word for word instead of researching each country's searches.
  • Judging a change after one day, or changing five things at once.
  • Asking for ratings at first launch, before the app has earned one.

How do you measure ASO?

ASO is measured with daily keyword ranks per storefront (one store in one country), the popularity and difficulty of each keyword, a visibility index across your keywords, listing conversion and ratings. Uptika reads these every day and combines them into a 0–100 ASO score per storefront: the methodology shows every formula and weight, keyword rank tracking explains the readings, and the glossary defines each term.

Where does Uptika fit?

Uptika's ASO puanı (ASO score) turns the checklist above into numbers for your own app: it scores search visibility, keyword coverage, metadata use, competitive strength, ratings, freshness and localization, and lists the findings that cost you the most points. Kelime radarı (keyword radar) tracks your ranks every day, and Rakip günlüğü (competitor log) shows when a rival changes its title or screenshots. Start with the free tools above, or open a free account: 1 app, 1 storefront and 10 keywords tracked daily, no card needed.

Questions

What is app store optimization (ASO)?

ASO is the ongoing work of improving an app's store listing and store signals so that it ranks for the searches people make on the App Store and Google Play, and so that more of the people who see it install it.

Is ASO worth it, and how is it different from SEO?

ASO applies the idea of SEO to app stores: match what people search, then earn the tap. The ranking signals differ. Apple names text relevance (title, subtitle, keywords, primary category) and user behavior (downloads, ratings and reviews); Google names ratings, reviews and downloads. Links, which matter in web SEO, play no part in store search. Store search traffic costs nothing per install, which is why ASO is usually worth doing before or alongside paid ads.

How do I do ASO step by step?

List the searches that describe your app, measure their popularity and difficulty, place the best ones in the indexed fields of each store, make the first screenshots explain the core benefit, earn ratings at good moments, then track ranks daily and revise the text with each release. The 10-step checklist on this page follows that order.

Which ASO tools are free?

Both stores give free data: Apple Ads shows a 1–5 search popularity for keywords, App Store Connect Analytics shows impressions and conversion by source, and Play Console shows the search terms that brought visitors to your listing. Uptika adds free tools without sign-in: Listing X-Ray, Keyword Atlas, Metadata Linter, One-Star Reasons and Chart Movers, and a free plan that tracks 1 app, 1 storefront and 10 keywords daily.

How long does ASO take to work?

Text changes only go live after a store review; Apple says it reviews at least 50% of submissions in under 24 hours and 90% in under 48 hours. After that, ranks usually move over days, not hours. Judge a change over a few weeks of daily rank readings and compare it with the same weeks before.
