Keyword Atlas
Keyword Atlas measures one search term's popularity and difficulty on the App Store and Google Play in up to 10 countries side by side, so one table shows where the same term is open and where it is crowded.
Method
- 01
Popularity: the store's own suggestions
We type the term letter by letter into each country's store search box and see how early the store suggests it. Suggested after one letter ≈ 100; suggested late scores low; never suggested scores 1. This is Uptika's own scale, not Apple's "Search Popularity" shown inside Apple Ads.
- 02
Difficulty: strength of the top results
Rating counts of the top 10 results for the term in that country (log scale, 70%) and the share carrying the term in their name (30%). On Google Play the first results of the search page are read; difficulty uses the apps whose rating count could be read, and says how many.
- 03
Each market's top 3
Every cell shows the 3 apps on top for the term. The same apps on top everywhere means a settled market; different leaders per country can mean a local gap.
- 04
Cache
Each cell is cached for 24 hours. Popularity the panel measured in the last 7 days is not read again.
Questions
Is popularity real search volume?
No. The stores do not publish search volume. Popularity comes from how early the store's autocomplete suggests the term; frequently searched terms are suggested early. It is a consistent scale for comparing countries and stores, not a volume estimate.
Why at most 10 countries?
Every cell means a few requests to the store, and we pace them so we never strain the stores. 10 countries × 2 stores can take about a minute; cells fill in as they arrive.
Which countries are available?
The 28 countries whose storefront id we know for the App Store suggestion service: the US, UK, Turkey, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Korea and more.
What does a high-popularity, low-difficulty cell mean?
A term people search for in that country while the apps on top are relatively weak: the best candidate to add to your text. Make sure the term fits your app; the top 3 tell you.
