How does the App Store commission work?
Standard rate: 30%. Schedule 2 of the Apple Developer Program License Agreement sets Apple's commission at 30% of the price for sales of apps and in-app purchases.
Subscriptions after one year: 15%. Apple's subscription page says: during a subscriber's first year you receive 70% of the price at each billing cycle, minus taxes; after a subscriber has one year of paid service, you receive 85%. If a subscription lapses and is renewed within 60 days, the paid days resume counting.
Small Business Program: 15%. Developers who earned up to $1M in proceeds in the previous calendar year, and new developers, can qualify. The limit covers you and all your associated developer accounts, for the previous calendar year and the current one. Members receive 85% on subscriptions from the first billing cycle. If you pass $1M during the year, the standard rate applies to future sales; if you fall below again, you can re-qualify the following year.
How to enroll:
- Be the Account Holder of the Apple Developer Program membership.
- Accept the latest Paid Apps agreement (Schedule 2) in App Store Connect.
- List all associated developer accounts, then submit the enrollment from the Small Business Program page.
Apple adjusts proceeds 15 days after the end of the fiscal month in which the enrollment is approved, so enroll before your launch month if you can.
Regional terms. The License Agreement has separate attachments for some storefronts, including the EU, Japan and Brazil, with different commission rates for developers who use alternative payment processing or link to outside offers. If you sell in those markets on those terms, read the attachment that applies to you.
How does the Google Play service fee work in 2026?
Google split its fee in two systems.
1. Users in the US, UK, EEA, Japan and Australia. The fee depends on whether the user's install is new or existing, with a regional rollout date as the cut-off: 30 June 2026 for the EEA, UK and US, and 30 September 2026 for Australia and Japan.
- New install: the user's first install or first update of the app from Google Play happened on or after the rollout date.
- Existing install: it happened before that date.
| Fee type | Auto-renewing subscriptions (new and existing installs) | Other transactions, new installs | Other transactions, existing installs |
|---|---|---|---|
| First $1M of annual earnings | 10% + 5% billing fee | 10% + 5% billing fee | 10% + 5% billing fee |
| Standard | 10% + 5% billing fee | 20% + 5% billing fee | 25% + 5% billing fee, or 20% for external web links |
| Play Games Level Up or Apps Experience programs | 10% + 5% billing fee | 15% + 5% billing fee | 20% + 5% billing fee, or 15% for external web links |
2. All other markets, until the new fees roll out globally.
| Fee type | Fee |
|---|---|
| Developers enrolled in the 15% service fee tier | 15% of the first $1M earned each year, 30% above $1M |
| Auto-renewing subscriptions | 15%, regardless of earnings |
| Other transactions | 15% or lower for developers in programs such as the Play Media Experience Program |
For South Korea and India, if you offer an alternative billing system next to Google Play's, the fee on those alternative transactions is the Google Play rate reduced by 4 percentage points.
Worked examples: how much do I keep?
These examples apply the official rates to a simple price. They ignore tax and currency conversion, which both stores handle per country, so your real payout will differ.
Example 1: a $9.99 monthly subscription, App Store.
| Case | Apple's share | You receive |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, subscriber's first year | 30% = $3.00 | $6.99 |
| Standard, after one year of paid service | 15% = $1.50 | $8.49 |
| Small Business Program, any month | 15% = $1.50 | $8.49 |
Example 2: the same subscription on Google Play.
| User's region | Google's share | You receive |
|---|---|---|
| US, UK, EEA, Japan, Australia | 10% + 5% = 15% = $1.50 | $8.49 |
| Other markets | 15% = $1.50 | $8.49 |
Example 3: a $4.99 one-time in-app purchase on Google Play, US user, developer above $1M in annual earnings.
| Install type | Google's share | You receive |
|---|---|---|
| New install | 20% + 5% = 25% = $1.25 | $3.74 |
| Existing install | 25% + 5% = 30% = $1.50 | $3.49 |
A formula you can reuse: net = price × (1 − commission rate), before tax. For Google Play in the new-fee regions, the commission rate is the service fee plus the 5% billing fee when Google Play Billing is used.
Which costs are not in the commission?
- Membership fees: Apple's developer program is $99 a year (shown in local currency in some regions); a Google Play developer account is a one-time $25.
- Taxes: both stores collect and remit sales tax or VAT in many countries; Apple defines proceeds as sales net of its commission and certain taxes and adjustments.
- Currency: Apple sets comparable prices across 175 storefronts from your base price; Google converts using the exchange rate on the day you set the price. See App Store pricing.
- Refunds and chargebacks: these reverse the sale and the commission on it.
How do I lower the rate legitimately?
- Enroll in the App Store Small Business Program if you qualify; it is not automatic.
- Make sure you are in Google Play's 15% tier if you earn under $1M a year; Google's 15% tier needs enrollment too.
- Prefer subscriptions for recurring value. Both stores charge less on subscriptions (Apple after year one, Google at 15% or 10% + 5%). Only do this when the product truly gives ongoing value; both stores require it.
- Retain subscribers past year one. On the App Store, every subscriber who reaches a year of paid service moves to 15%. Subscription offers, win-back offers and offer codes are the official tools for this.
What does this mean for pricing?
The fee is a percentage, so it does not change which price point is best; it changes your margin. Decide the model first (How apps make money), then the price (App Store pricing and Google Play subscriptions), then check the net with the formula above.
How does Uptika help here?
Uptika does not read your revenue. It tracks the store side that drives it: the Rival log records the day a competitor changes its price or its listing, the App dossier keeps any app's versions and changes, and Chart Movers shows daily top-grossing movement in a category for free: Chart Movers. The Free plan tracks one app in one storefront: start free.
Questions
What is the Google Play commission in 2026?
It depends on the user's region. For users in the US, UK and EEA (from 30 June 2026) and Australia and Japan (from 30 September 2026): 10% + 5% billing fee on the first $1M of annual earnings and on all auto-renewing subscriptions; above that, 20% + 5% for other transactions from new installs and 25% + 5% (or 20% for external web links) from existing installs. In all other markets: 15% on the first $1M a year for developers enrolled in the 15% tier, 30% above it, and 15% on auto-renewing subscriptions.
How much is the App Store commission?
Apple's standard commission is 30% on paid apps and in-app purchases. It drops to 15% for members of the App Store Small Business Program (up to $1M in proceeds a year) and for auto-renewing subscription renewals after a subscriber has more than one year of paid service. Some storefronts, such as the EU, Japan and Brazil, have separate terms with other rates.
How do I qualify for 15% on the App Store?
Join the App Store Small Business Program: you and your associated developer accounts must have earned no more than $1M in proceeds in the previous calendar year and stay under $1M in the current one. The Account Holder enrolls, accepts the Paid Apps agreement and lists associated accounts.
Do Google Play subscriptions cost 15% from day one?
Yes. Outside the new-fee regions, auto-renewing subscriptions are charged 15% regardless of earnings. In the US, UK, EEA, Japan and Australia, auto-renewing subscriptions are 10% plus a 5% billing fee for both new and existing installs.
Is the commission charged on tax?
Apple defines proceeds as sales net of its commission and certain taxes and adjustments, and both stores collect and remit tax in many countries. How tax interacts with the fee depends on the country, so check the payout reports in App Store Connect and Play Console for your exact numbers.
