What is App Store Connect? Sections, roles and API keys
App Store Connect is Apple's web panel (with a companion iPhone app) where members of the Apple Developer Program create app records, upload and test builds with TestFlight, write the App Store product page, submit for review, read analytics and sales, manage agreements and payments, and give team members roles.
What is App Store Connect?
App Store Connect is where an app becomes an App Store product. Xcode builds the app; App Store Connect holds everything around it: the app record, builds, beta testing, the product page in every language, prices, review submissions, ratings and reviews, analytics, payments and the team's access. You get it with an Apple Developer Program membership.
What are the main sections?
| Section | What you do there |
|---|---|
| Apps | One record per app: versions, product page text, screenshots, App Privacy, pricing and availability, in-app purchases and subscriptions, custom product pages, in-app events, ratings and reviews |
| TestFlight (inside each app) | Builds, internal and external tester groups, public links, beta review |
| App Review | Draft and sent submissions, messages from App Review |
| Analytics | Traffic sources to the product page, conversion rate (product page views to downloads), sessions, proceeds per paying user, peer comparison, product page test results |
| Sales and Trends | Next-day units, proceeds, sales and pre-orders by app, country and period |
| Payments and Financial Reports | Final payments based on settled transactions, on Apple’s fiscal calendar |
| Business | Agreements, tax and banking, compliance (including the EU trader status) |
| Users and Access | Team members, roles, app access, sandbox testers, API keys under Integrations |
Inside an app record, the left sidebar holds the platform version (for example iOS App 1.2), App Information, Pricing and Availability, App Privacy, Ratings and Reviews, and the monetization and featuring pages. The version page is where you attach a build, write What's New, choose the release option and turn on phased release.
Which roles exist and who should get which?
| Role | Can do | Give it to |
|---|---|---|
| Account Holder | The enrolling person; the only one who signs legal agreements, renews membership and requests API access | The founder or legal owner, one person |
| Admin | Most of the Account Holder's powers, all apps, manages users | A co-founder or technical lead |
| App Manager | Everything about an app: pricing, product page, builds, submissions | A product owner |
| Developer | Development and delivery of builds | Engineers |
| Marketing | Marketing materials and artwork; Apple contacts this role about featuring | Marketing lead |
| Finance | Financial reports, tax forms, payments, sales and analytics | Accounting |
| Sales | Sales, downloads and analytics | Analysts |
| Customer Support | Reads and replies to customer reviews | Support team |
App access can be limited to chosen apps for most roles; Account Holder, Admin, Finance and users with access to reports always see all apps. Internal TestFlight testers must be users with the Account Holder, Admin, App Manager, Developer or Marketing role.
What is an App Store Connect API key?
An API key lets software act on App Store Connect for you: upload metadata, read sales or analytics reports, manage TestFlight, reply to reviews. It signs short-lived JSON Web Tokens (JWT).
- Team key: created by an Admin under Users and Access, Integrations, App Store Connect API, with a role you choose. It reaches all apps.
- Individual key: created from a user's profile, carrying that user's access.
- The private key (.p8) downloads once; Apple does not keep a copy. Never commit it to a repository or put it in client code, and revoke it immediately if it leaks.
Give tools the narrowest role that works: a reporting tool needs a reporting role, not Admin.
How does it compare with Google Play Console?
Play Console is Google's equivalent, with different names: tracks instead of TestFlight groups, App content instead of App Privacy and age rating pages, Publishing overview instead of the App Review section. See What is Google Play Console?.
Where to go next
- The whole submission path: How to publish an app on the App Store.
- Beta testing: the TestFlight guide.
- Rolling out updates gradually: phased release and staged rollout.
Uptika can read App Store Connect for you: connect it with an API key in Integrations and Uptika pulls your reviews with your own replies, lets you answer them from the panel after an explicit confirmation, and on paid plans shows downloads and conversion next to your keyword ranks, without exporting reports by hand. The public data (ranks, rivals, store pages) works without any key. Start on the free plan.
