What are the App Store app preview specs?

App previews are optional short videos on your product page. You can upload up to three per supported device size and language, and they play before your screenshots on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. These are Apple's requirements as of November 2026:

Default poster frame5 seconds in5 seconds in

Processing after upload can take up to 24 hours. macOS, tvOS and visionOS previews are landscape only; iOS previews can be portrait or landscape.

Which resolutions does App Store Connect accept?

App Store Connect does not want the device's native pixels. It accepts a fixed set of resolutions per display class, because most previews are screen recordings.

Display classAccepted resolution (portrait / landscape)
All current iPhones with Dynamic Island or Face ID, and iPhone Duo886×1920 / 1920×886
iPhone with Home button, large (8 Plus and earlier Plus models)1080×1920 / 1920×1080
iPhone with Home button, medium (SE 2nd and 3rd gen, 8 and earlier)750×1334 / 1334×750
iPhone with Home button, 4-inch1080×1920 / 1920×1080
iPhone with Home button, 3.5-inchPreviews not supported
iPad 13-inch, 11-inch, 10.5-inch1200×1600 / 1600×1200
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd gen)1200×1600 / 1600×1200, or 900×1200 / 1200×900

If you leave a size empty, App Store Connect uses a scaled preview from a related size, the same way it does for screenshots. If a localized preview is missing, the preview in the next best available language is used.

If your preview has a different aspect ratio from your screenshots, Apple shows it in the "A Closer Look" section of the product page instead of first.

What can the video show?

Guideline 2.3.4 is strict: previews may only use video screen captures of the app itself. You may add narration and video or text overlays to explain anything the footage does not make clear. Stickers and iMessage extensions may show the experience inside Messages. Like all metadata, the video must also be suitable for a 4+ rating (2.3.8) and must not show other mobile platforms (2.3.10).

Practical consequences:

  • No live-action footage of people using phones as the main content.
  • No rendered marketing trailer that is not the app.
  • Captions are fine and useful, because previews autoplay muted on the product page.

How should I structure a 30-second preview?

Apple notes that previews autoplay with the sound off, so the first seconds have to work visually. A structure that fits the rules:

  1. 0–3 s: the core screen in action, with a short caption stating the main benefit.
  2. 3–12 s: the main task from start to result, in one continuous flow.
  3. 12–25 s: two or three secondary features, each a few seconds, each with a caption.
  4. 25–30 s: end on the screen people will use most. Leave the poster frame on a clear, readable moment.

Set the poster frame yourself: it shows wherever the video does not autoplay and during app install. Poster frames cannot be edited after the asset is approved.

How do I export and upload?

  1. Record on device or in the Simulator, then edit in any video editor.
  2. Export H.264 at 886×1920 (iPhone portrait) and 1200×1600 (iPad portrait), 30 fps, 10–12 Mbps, stereo AAC 256 kbps. Keep it between 15 and 30 seconds and under 500 MB.
  3. In App Store Connect, in Apps, choose the app and the version in the sidebar.
  4. In Product Page Information, open App Previews and Screenshots, pick the device tab and drop the file into the well. You can also upload to the Asset Library and pick it with Browse Assets.
  5. To set the poster frame, open View All Sizes in Media Manager, hold the pointer over the preview and choose Edit Poster Frame.
  6. Submit with the version (or with a custom product page or a product page optimization test).

How does the Google Play preview video work?

Google Play handles video differently: there is one preview video per store listing, added as a YouTube URL in the Graphics section of the main store listing (Grow users > Store presence > Main store listing).

RuleDetail
LinkThe video's own YouTube URL; no playlist or channel URL, no timecode parameters
VisibilityPublic or unlisted, not private
AdsMust be off (turn off monetization); copyrighted content with monetization claims can force ads, so use a clean video
RestrictionsNot age-restricted, must be embeddable
Where it showsBefore the screenshots on the listing; may also show on home and search
AutoplayMay autoplay inline, muted, for up to 30 seconds depending on device, settings and network
CoverThe feature graphic, with a play button, when the video does not autoplay

Google recommends showing the real app within the first 10 seconds, keeping at least 80% of the video as actual app experience, avoiding hands tapping devices unless the use is off-device, adding captions, and not using ranking, price or call-to-action text. Games need a preview video to appear in some parts of Google Play.

What about the new App Store header and search videos?

From iOS and iPadOS 27, apps can add separate creative assets for the product page header and search results, including video from 5 to 30 seconds at 30 or 60 fps. These follow guideline 2.3.14, not 2.3.4, so they can show brand or seasonal content. They are covered in New App Store creative assets.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading at native device resolution (for example 1320×2868). Use 886×1920.
  • Exporting at 60 fps. App previews accept at most 30 fps.
  • A 12-second clip. The minimum is 15 seconds.
  • Footage that is not the app, which fails 2.3.4.
  • A Google Play video with ads or set to private, which will not show.

How do I know if a video helps?

Test it. On the App Store, product page optimization can compare a page with and without a preview. In Uptika, the Rival log records when competitors change their screenshots or icon, and Listing X-Ray counts the previews and screenshots on any public page for free. The Free plan tracks one app in one storefront: start free.
