What sizes does Google Play need, in one table?

Google Play asks for three graphic assets before you can publish a store listing: an app icon, a feature graphic and at least two screenshots. A preview video is optional. The table below collects every limit from Play Console Help and the Android Developers icon page as of November 2026.

You upload all of these in Play Console under Grow users > Store presence > Main store listing, in the Graphics section. Custom store listings have their own graphics.

What are the exact screenshot rules?

The hard rules apply to every screenshot. The recommended rules decide whether Google Play can show your app in its larger, screenshot-led formats.

Hard rules (the upload fails or the listing cannot be published otherwise):

  • At least two screenshots in total, across any device types.
  • JPEG or 24-bit PNG. No alpha channel, so export without transparency.
  • Shortest side at least 320 px, longest side at most 3,840 px.
  • The long side can be at most twice the short side. A 1080×2400 phone capture (ratio 2.22) fails; crop or pad it to 1080×2160 or less.
  • Up to eight screenshots per device type.

Recommended for apps (needed for the large recommendation formats):

  • At least four screenshots with a minimum of 1080 px.
  • Portrait in 9:16, at least 1080×1920 px. Landscape in 16:9, at least 1920×1080 px.

Recommended for games:

  • At least three 16:9 landscape screenshots (1920×1080 px or more) or three 9:16 portrait screenshots (1080×1920 px or more), showing real gameplay.

A safe default for a phone app: export 1080×1920 px PNG files without transparency, upload at least four, and put the strongest one first.

Do I need tablet and Chromebook screenshots?

Not to publish, but they matter if your app runs on large screens. Google Play's guidance for tablets and Chromebooks is a minimum of four screenshots, between 1,080 and 7,680 px, in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. It also asks you to leave out extra text that is not part of the app, because it can be cut off on Play home pages at some screen sizes.

Device types with their own screenshot slots: phones, 7-inch tablets, 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS watches, Android Automotive OS and Android XR headsets. A few have special rules:

  • Wear OS: at least one screenshot of the current watch app, 1:1, at least 384×384 px, interface only, no device frames, no transparent backgrounds.
  • Android TV: at least one TV screenshot plus the 1280×720 banner.
  • Android Automotive OS: if you provide screenshots, at least two portrait (800×1,280 px) and two landscape (1,024×768 px), taken from a generic system image.
  • Android XR: between four and eight screenshots, PNG or JPEG, up to 8 MB each, 8:5, recommended 3840×2400.

What is the feature graphic and how big is it?

The feature graphic is a 1024×500 px banner, JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha, and you must provide one to publish. Google Play uses it as the cover image of your preview video, and in large-format collections and ads for apps.

How to design it so it survives every crop:

  1. Keep the logo, app name, slogan and main UI near the centre. Google Play marks cutoff zones at the edges where content may be hidden depending on the layout.
  2. Put only background elements at the edges.
  3. Avoid pure white, black or dark grey backgrounds; they blend into the Play background.
  4. Do not repeat your icon in large size; Google Play shows the icon next to the graphic anyway.
  5. Skip fine details. Much of the graphic is seen on small phone screens.
  6. Localize any text in the graphic for each language you support.

What are the Google Play icon specs?

The store icon is a 512×512 px, 32-bit PNG with alpha, sRGB colour space, up to 1,024 KB. Upload it as a full square: Google Play applies the rounded mask (radius equal to 30% of the icon size) and a drop shadow itself, so do not round the corners or add an outer shadow. Prefer an opaque background; transparent areas show the Play UI colour behind them.

The store icon is separate from your launcher icon (the adaptive icon in the app bundle), but it should be a higher-resolution version of the same design. The full icon guide, with the App Store side, is in App icon sizes for iOS and Google Play.

What text and claims are not allowed in the graphics?

Google Play's metadata policy and its preview asset guidelines limit what your images may say. The same rules apply to the icon, feature graphic, screenshots and video.

Not allowed or advised againstExamples
Store performance or ranking claims"#1", "Top", "Best", "App of the year", "Popular", award icons
Price and promotional information"10% off", "Sale", "Free for a limited time", "$50 cash back"
References to Google Play programs"Editor's choice", "New"
Calls to action"Download now", "Install now", "Play now"
Misleading symbols in the iconA fake new-message dot, download arrows for an app that does not download content
Other stores' badgesAny store badge or icon
Third-party characters or logosWithout permission

Google also recommends that taglines take no more than 20% of a screenshot, that screenshots show the real app experience, and that the first three screenshots put the UI first. Policy violations in metadata can lead to removal or suspension, so these are worth checking before every upload; the full rules are in Google Play metadata policy.

How should screenshot alt text be written?

Add alt text to every screenshot and graphic, in 140 characters or less. Screen readers read it to people who cannot see the image. Describe the important part of the screen, and do not start with "image of" or "photo of", because the screen reader already says that. Example: "Weekly budget screen with spending split by category."

How does the preview video work on Google Play?

Google Play takes one preview video per listing as a YouTube URL. Use the video's own URL, not a playlist or channel, and no extra parameters like timecodes. The video must be public or unlisted, not age-restricted, embeddable and without ads, so turn monetization off. It plays before your screenshots, and depending on the device, settings and network it can autoplay muted for up to 30 seconds. Details and the App Store side are in App preview video specs.

Pre-upload checklist

  1. Icon: 512×512, 32-bit PNG, sRGB, 1,024 KB or less, square corners, no outer shadow.
  2. Feature graphic: exactly 1024×500, no alpha, key content in the centre.
  3. Screenshots: no alpha, 320–3,840 px, ratio 2:1 or less.
  4. Apps: four or more at 1080×1920 (portrait) or 1920×1080 (landscape). Games: three or more in 16:9 or 9:16.
  5. No ranking, price, "new" or call-to-action wording in any image.
  6. Alt text on every image, 140 characters or less.
  7. Tablet and Chromebook sets if your app supports large screens.
  8. Localized text overlays for each language you support.

Common upload errors and fixes

  • "Image has transparency": re-export as JPEG, or as PNG with the alpha channel removed.
  • Rejected aspect ratio: your long side is more than twice the short side. Tall phone captures often are; crop to 9:16.
  • Blurry results on large screens: you uploaded at the 320 px minimum. Use 1080 px or more.
  • Feature graphic text cut off: content sits in the cutoff zones near the edges. Move it to the centre.

How do I check what my listing shows today?

The Uptika Listing X-Ray reads any public App Store or Google Play page and lists, among other things, how many screenshots and preview videos it shows, then ranks three fixes; it is free and needs no sign-in: Listing X-Ray. In the Uptika panel, the Rival log records when a competitor changes its icon or screenshots, so you can see what your category is testing. The Free plan tracks one app in one storefront; start here.

Questions

What is the Google Play screenshot size?

Any size from 320 px to 3,840 px per side works, as long as the long side is at most twice the short side, in JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. To be eligible for the large recommendation formats, apps need at least four screenshots of at least 1080 px: 1080×1920 for portrait (9:16) or 1920×1080 for landscape (16:9).

What is the Google Play feature graphic size?

Exactly 1024×500 px, JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha channel. It is required to publish the store listing and is used as the cover of your preview video and in large-format collections.

Are tablet screenshots required on Google Play?

Not to publish: the hard minimum is two screenshots across device types. Google Play recommends at least four screenshots for tablets and Chromebooks, between 1,080 and 7,680 px, in 16:9 or 9:16, so your app can be shown well on large screens.

What are the Google Play icon size requirements?

A 512×512 px 32-bit PNG with alpha, sRGB, up to 1,024 KB, uploaded as a full square without rounded corners or drop shadow. Google Play applies the mask (corner radius of 30% of the icon size) and the shadow itself.

How many screenshots can I upload to Google Play?

Up to eight per device type (phone, 7-inch tablet, 10-inch tablet, Chromebook, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS, Android XR). At least two in total are needed to publish.
